Assessment Task:

Design a sustainable city of the future addressing geographic and sociological concerns as well as patterns in environmental sustainability. Students will keep track of their progress as well as reflect on the city they developed on their blog. This is Stage 1. Stage 2 and 3 will happen in Urban Environment and Changing Space. The final result should be a comprehensive blueprint and business model for a sustainable city.



Sustainable City, Research, Stage 1

Research what makes a sustainable city. You need to research each point below (sections 1-6). Study examples that exist today and projects planned for the future. Bring your research to class.


Sustainable City, Planning Proposal, Stage 2

Submit a proposal for a new city of your design. Make sure it touches on points 1-7 below.


Sustainable City, Reflection and Evaluation of your sustainable city and the future of sustainable cities, Stage 3




Make sure to cover the following points:



1. Economic viability (will your city work)

a. Costs

b. Capital needed

c. Supply/Demand of what your producing (who wants to move and do business here? Why?)

2. Geographic considerations (where will your city be and why)

a. Map

b. Where is it and Why?

c. Climate/Weather

d. Neighboring countries

3. Environmental impact (how will your city affect the environment)

a. To what degree is your city eco-friendly and sustainable? What are you basing this on?

b. How will it affect the water?

c. How will it affect the soil?

d. What impact will it have on the atmosphere?

e. How will it impact the local environment and the greater environment?

4. Architecture
a. How will your buildings be designed?
b. What makes them sustainable?

5. Infrastructure
a. Garbage
b. Sewage
c. Electricity
d. Running water
e. How will your infrastructure be sustainable?

6. Social impact

a. Who will you hire? How much will you pay your workers?

b. What impact will your business have on society locally and at large?

c. Is your development going to use fair trade, be sourced with products locally or abroad? Why?


7. The originality of the idea. Is your plan unique? Is it creative?

a. Is it too unique? Will it work? Has any part of your plan succeeded somewhere else before?


8. Sources Keep track of your sources.

a. Where did you do your research?

b. What ideas are yours, what ideas did you find somewhere else?

c. Include a works cited.
